MIT CGPA & GPA Calculator

Calculate your MIT GPA on the official 5.0 scale (A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, F = 0), weighted by units and rounded to one decimal place like the MIT Registrar does. How MIT GPA works ↓

Grading system: MIT (5.0 scale)

Choose the letter grade for each subject and enter its units. Only graded subjects count; P, S, I and other symbols are left out.

How is the MIT GPA calculated?

GPA = (Σ units × grade weight) ÷ (Σ units)

Example: a 12-unit subject with an A (5) and a 12-unit subject with a B (4) → (12×5 + 12×4) ÷ 24 = 108 ÷ 24 = 4.5

How MIT calculates your GPA

MIT's grade point average is on a 5.0 scale, not the usual 4.0. The Registrar weights grades as A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, F = 0 and O = 0. To find your GPA, multiply the units of each graded subject by its weight, add everything up and divide by your total graded units. MIT rounds the result to one decimal place: if the hundredths digit is 5 or more, the tenths digit goes up, so 4.75 becomes 4.8. This calculator shows your result the same way.

Three MIT units are equal to one semester hour, so a typical 12-unit subject is like a 4-credit course elsewhere. Type the units shown for each subject.

These are left out of the calculation: subjects graded P, S, URN, SA or T; incomplete or unfinished subjects (I, OX, J, U); grades from Advanced Standing Exams; and ROTC subjects. Because P grades don't count, first-year students don't have a GPA until the spring term ends.

If you repeat a subject, it counts in your GPA each time you take it. Your cumulative GPA appears on your transcript, while the term GPA is shown on your grade report.

MIT GPA on a 4.0 scale

Applications outside MIT often ask for a GPA "out of 4.0". MIT doesn't publish an official conversion, but the letters line up neatly: an A is 5 at MIT and 4 on the usual scale, a B is 4 instead of 3, and so on. As long as you have no F or O grades, your GPA on the 4.0 scale is simply your MIT GPA minus 1, so 4.6 becomes 3.6. If you do have F or O grades, add (failed units ÷ total graded units) to that number. The converter tab does the simple version for you.

Multiplying by 0.8, a rule of thumb you may see online, gives a different answer (4.6 × 0.8 = 3.68), because it stretches the scale instead of shifting each letter.

MIT CGPA calculator FAQs

Is MIT GPA out of 5 or 4?

Out of 5. MIT weights grades as A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, F = 0 and O = 0, so a perfect MIT GPA is 5.0.

How do I convert my MIT GPA to a 4.0 scale?

MIT has no official conversion. If you have no F or O grades, subtract 1, because each MIT letter is worth exactly one point more than on a 4.0 scale. So 4.6 at MIT is 3.6 out of 4.0.

How does MIT round the GPA?

To one decimal place. If the hundredths digit is 5 or more, the tenths digit rounds up, so 4.75 becomes 4.8.

Do P/NR first-year grades count in the MIT GPA?

No. P grades are not used in the GPA, so first-year students do not have a GPA until the spring term ends.

Does a repeated subject count twice at MIT?

Yes. A repeated subject counts in your GPA each time you take it.

What units should I enter?

Enter the units listed for each subject, for example 12 for a standard subject or 6 for a half-term subject. Three MIT units equal one semester hour.
